Richard II
Feature Film
Richard II is a feature-length film adaptation of the Stratford Festival stage production. Based on Brad Fraser’s revolutionary reimagining of Shakespeare’s play — and originally directed for the stage by Jillian Keiley — the film transposes the story of a divine-right king into the glamour, grit, and excess of late 1970s and early ’80s New York. It was directed for the screen by Nicholas Shields of Suede. Shot in front of a live audience, Suede led all cinematography and post-production to transform the theatrical experience into a cinematic work, now streaming on Stratfest@Home and other platforms.
